About Nar Phu Valley Trek

Nar Phu Valley Trek is less beaten trekking trail, situated in North of Annapurna Conservation Area. The word Nar is originated from a Himalayan wild animal “Naura”- Himalayan Sheep and “Phu” means village. The place is main habitan of Blue Sheep. With the immense potential of enticing natural attractions, dazzling mountain ranges and breathtaking river, Nar Phu offers unlimited experiences for all natural enthusiasts. The awe-inspiring waterfalls and green forest, rich in flora and fauna is major part of trek.

The enthralling Nar Phu Valley is ultimate destination of the trek. The trek can be organized by different ways. Trip to Nar Phu Valley would much more meaning full with adding the itinerary up to Throng La Pass and Muktinath, Mustang. Nar Phu is an ancient village of Gurung ethnic community of Neapl. The locals are culturally and traditionally are rich with own typical language, food and festivals.

The people are Buddhist followers; they pay high respect to the god Buddha along with own local traditional ditties. As a trekkers you can explore some of the ancient monasteries and temple on the way.

The trek starts from Besisahar, which is 5/6 hr far from Kathmandu. The 60% of trail is same of popular Annapurna Circuit Trek. And the trail can be continuing from Nar Phu to Muktinath via Throng La pass. Month of autumn and spring are considered as a best season for trekking to Nar Phu Valley. Being as less beaten trekking trails, we as a professional trekking company here in Nepal always suggest you to have a experienced local guide. Drink more water while getting high altitude and always carry some dry foods and snakes in your hand carry bag packs.

Welcome to the Himalayan country, Nepal. Upon your arrival, our Southcol Adventures' representatives will greet and drive you to your respective hotel. You may rest and explore the city of Thamel the remaining time of the day.

    As the Nar & Phu valleys are restricted areas, we require Restricted Area Permit to be allowed entering in these regions. After taking Permit, you can spend your time visiting various heritage sites including Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Bouddhanath. You may go for shopping to take trekking equipments if necessary.

      We will go for a long drive today. After breakfast, we ride on a mini bus from Kathmandu and descends through steeps hills, follows the winding roadway on the bank of the Trishuli River. With the picturesque mountain views, we travel through the foothills and reach Besisahar taking 7 hours. Overnight stay at Besisahar.

      • Time8 hrs

      From here, we travel on the rough, rocky and bumpy road taking jeep. As the journey progresses, we pass through stunning sights of the Marsyangdi River, remarkable gorges, amazing waterfalls and the most notable one, Octupus Waterfall, which comes right after Chyame. About 5 hours of journey, we reach Koto, a small village moslty inhabited by Gurungs surrounded by traditional stoned houses. Overnight stay at Koto.

      • Time6 hrs

      As we have to cover the long distance today, we start our trek early morning after crossing over the Marsyangdi River. The journey continues through pine and bamboo forests, rock carved path, accompanied by several waterfalls. Taking about 3 hours, we reach Chamche Odar where we take short break for lunch. After two and half hours of gradual walk we reach at the point, where you have to start climbing high hills. About one and half hours of steep hike through dense forests, you get to a Meta village, a small settlement influenced by Tibetan culture. From Koto you can witness the astonishing views of Pisang Peak, Nar Peak, and Annapurna II. Overnight stay at Meta.

      • Time6 hrs

      We are having another long trekking day today. The trail resumes early morning passing accross incredible monasteries, chortens with colorful prayer flags, and walk ups and downs frequently on the forested path and traverse past suspension bridge to reach Kayang which takes about 4 hours. From Kayang, you will be rewarded with the awe-inspiring detailed view of Pisang Peak and Annapurna II. After taking short break for lunch, we countinue to trek following alongside the Phu Khola(stream), explore historic Tibetan fortress, cross a wooden bridge and pass through a single massive rock where we climb uphill to get to Phu village. Upon arrival, we van visit Tashi Lhakhang Monastery as well as enjoy the magnificent views of Himlung Himal and other snow capped mountains. Overnight stay at Phu Village.

      • Time7 hrs

      Today is a well-deserved rest and acclimatization day in the remote and culturally rich village of Phu. Taking rest allows your body to adjust to the high altitude before heading toward higher passes like Nar Pass and Kang La. To make body remain active, we opt to take a short acclimatization hike to Himlung Base Camp offering astonishing panoramic mountain vistas.

      • Time7 hrs

      After breakfast today, we descend and retrace our steps back towards the split point in Meta, where taking left direction leads the path toward Nar Village whereas redirecting towards right took us Phu village which we visited already. During the trek, while moving through pasture land we might spot Blue Sheep grazzing. About 6-7 hours of trekking we reach Nar Phedi. Participate in daily rituals and take blessings which happens every evening. Overnight stay at Nar Phedi.

      • Time6-7 hrs

      We are having a short trek  today. After breakfast, we proceed our trail towards Nar Valley. Beholding the closed view of snow-capped Kang Garu summit, the path is accompanied by Mani wall, Gompas and mud-walled cottage. The trail hike on a dry, rocky and windy path and climbs through traditional stairs in some segments. About 3 hours of hike today, we reach Nar village. Situating in high altitude, Nar village offers breathtaking views of Pisang Peak, Amotsang Himal, Kang Garo, and Pokhar Khang. Overnight stay at Nar village.

      • Time7 hrs

      Today is a crucial rest and acclimatization day in the remote and culturally rich village of Nar. Taking rest allows your body to adjust to the high altitude before heading toward higher pass Kang La Pass tomorrow. To make body remain active, we opt to take a short acclimatization hike to nearby viewpoints to observe the clear panoramic sight of Pisung Himal, Kang Guru, and others summits. 

        We will have the most challenging, yet rewarding trek today. As we have to cover a long distance, we start to trek early morning before sunrise. The journey continues ascending steeply passing through yak pastures, reach Jhomu Kharka after moving past Temdenzon Khola. We climb steeply on rocky ridges to get to the highest altitude of this trail, the Kang La Pass. This pass offers the breathtaking Panoramic views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Pisang Peak and many others. After exploring the mountains and clicking photos, we descend towards Ngawal. About 3-4 hours of gradual descent we reach a small settlement in the Annapurna region, Ngawal, where we stay overnight.

        • Time8 hrs

        After breakfast, the trail descends sharply on the steep route into the valley floor to reach Humde upon which, we witness the landscape changes from barren to grassy and forested landscape. The journey continuous through meadow grassland and later join the main road to get to Braka where you traverse past mani walls, monasteries and chortens and the famous Sher Compa. After taking short break, the trail proceeds following the main road in between the steep mountians and enjoying the scenery of snow-capped peaks. About 5 hrs of easy and smooth trekking get to the beautiful himalayan town, Manang, where we spend overnight.

        • Time4 hrs

        It's a short trek today. The trail resumes moving through the alpine grass and junipers accompanied by scenic beauty along with multiple streams. While hiking through a rugged route passing scattered villages, we can encounter the wild goat and yak grazing in the pasture land. About 3-4 hours of trek,  gradual ascend on early section and later, ascend on the steep hills with exploring the surrounding views of the Annapurna range, the trail reach Yak Kharka, where we stay overnight.

        • Time3 - 4 hours

        We embark our trail today with an immediate ascent and cross  a suspension bridge to reach Ledar. We, sometimes ascend, descend and walk on flat surfaces and cross multiple suspension bridges. During the trail, we can observe the changes of terrains from the meadow vegetation to the dusty, rocky and dry landscape. Before reaching Thorung Phedi, we hike on the narrow rocky ridge and pass through steeply slope which is landslide-prone. We stop our journey toady at Thorong Phedi as it brings the pleasant night in a beautiful atmosphere being in the lower altitude.

        • Time4-5 hrs

        To avoid the windy atmosphere, we continue our trek early morning before the sunrise. Taking about 4 hours after the challenging trail with steep ascent and descent, we get to Thorong-la pass. This is the world's highest pass and mostly used pass bringing the incredible views of Mount Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu. We, then, descend gradually towards Muktinath and the elevation decline sharply. About 7-8 hours of the gradual walk on the amazing landscape takes you to Muktinath. In mukthinath, we visit muktinath temple which is the sacred temple for Hindus having 108 taps and two ponds which run through natural spring, and monastery for Buddhist followers. We spend beautiful time in Muktinath and stay overnight. 

        • Time7-8 hrs

        After morning breakfast, we proceed our trail towards Jomsom through Kagbeni. This part of the trail is desertic, dry, windy and dusty. For the first hour, we pass terraced fields,  streams, and other 3 hours of walk on barren hills, we reach Kagbeni. After spending quality time visiting the traditional and religious village with old monasteries, we navigate our route towards Jomsom. We descend on the windy and dusty unpaved path to get to the deepest gorge in the world, the Kali Gandaki Gorge. Walking about 3 hours on sandy trail, we reach Jomsom where we spend the night.

        • Time5 hrs

        Normally the atmosphere becomes very windy after 11am onwards. So, we take early morning flight to Pokhara which takes about 22 minutes. This scenic flight brings spectacular views of Mount Dhaulagiri, Fishtail, Annapurna, Nilgiri and other snowcapped peaks. After landing, we will have rest of the day to spend in Pokhara. It is one of the most tourist visited area because of the attractions and activities it offers. Some of the  famous places includes Fewa Lake, Begnas Lake, Peace Pagoda (Stupa), International Mountain Museum, Gupteswor Gufa (Cave) and the activities to enjoy includes boating, paragliding, bungy jumping and zipliner. You can utilize you time to go for sightseeing in the place mentioned above. Stay overnight in Pokhara. Experience the vibrant nightlife with bustling streets, lively clubs and delicious local cuisine and watch live cultural dances.

          We drive back to Kathmandu by tourist bus which takes about 7 hours. However, if you want a short trip to Kathmandu, you can take flight option which is you have to pay an extra cost.

            Today is the leisure day for you to explore Kathmandu Valley. You can go sightseeing UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Bauddhanath, Swyambhunath, Pasupatinath, Durbar Squares of Patan, Bhaktapur and Kathmandu (Hanuman dhoka). Enjoy the vibrant nightlife in Tamel and shop for souvenirs.
