Essential Travel Information for Nepal

Planning a journey to Nepal requires more than choosing a destination. Understanding visas, permits, seasons, transportation, accommodation, altitude, health, insurance and local customs helps you prepare confidently for your adventure. At South Col Adventures, we provide practical guidance before and during your journey so you can enjoy Nepal with greater comfort, confidence and peace of mind.

Before You Travel

🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements

Most international travelers require a visa to enter Nepal. Depending on your nationality and travel plans, visas may be available on arrival or through a Nepali diplomatic mission. Make sure your passport has sufficient validity and check the latest entry requirements before departure.

📄 Trekking Permits & Conservation Fees

Many trekking and climbing destinations require permits and conservation or national park fees. Requirements vary according to the region, route and activity. South Col Adventures assists with the necessary permits and documentation for your selected itinerary.

🏥 Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended, particularly for trekking and peak climbing. For high-altitude journeys, your policy should cover trekking at the planned altitude, emergency medical treatment, evacuation and mountain rescue, where applicable.

Best Time to Visit Nepal

Nepal can be visited throughout the year, but the ideal season depends on your destination and activity.

  • Spring (March–May): Excellent for trekking, peak climbing and mountain expeditions, with warmer temperatures and blooming rhododendrons.
  • Summer/Monsoon (June–August): Rainy in many regions, but suitable for rain-shadow destinations such as Mustang and Dolpo.
  • Autumn (September–November): One of the best seasons for trekking and climbing, with generally clear skies and excellent mountain visibility.
  • Winter (December–February): Cooler at higher elevations but suitable for many lower-altitude treks, cultural tours and selected mountain adventures.

Altitude & Acclimatization

Altitude is an important consideration on Himalayan treks and climbs. As elevation increases, the body needs time to adjust to lower oxygen levels. Our itineraries include gradual elevation gains and acclimatization days where appropriate.

During the journey, maintain a steady pace, stay hydrated and communicate any unusual symptoms to your guide. Never ignore signs of altitude-related illness.

Accommodation

Accommodation varies according to the destination. In Kathmandu and major tourist areas, travelers can choose from a range of hotels. On trekking routes, accommodation is generally provided in local teahouses, lodges or mountain guesthouses, while remote trekking and climbing programs may require camping.

Facilities become more basic as you travel into remote and high-altitude areas, making flexibility and a positive attitude an important part of the Himalayan experience.

Food & Drinking Water

Nepal offers a wide variety of food, including Nepali, Tibetan, Indian and international dishes. Popular trekking meals include dal bhat, noodles, soups, pasta, rice, vegetables and Tibetan bread.

Drink sufficient water throughout the trek. Bottled or properly treated water is recommended, particularly at higher elevations. Travelers may bring water-purification tablets or other suitable purification systems for longer journeys.

Transportation in Nepal

Depending on your itinerary, transportation may include private vehicles, tourist buses, domestic flights and local jeeps. Mountain roads can be rough and travel times may vary because of weather, traffic and road conditions.

For trekking destinations such as Everest, domestic flights to mountain airstrips may also be affected by weather, so maintaining some flexibility in your schedule is recommended.

What to Pack

Your packing list depends on the season, destination and altitude. Essential items commonly include:

  • Comfortable trekking shoes and suitable clothing
  • Warm layers and waterproof outerwear
  • Sleeping bag where required
  • Sunglasses and sun protection
  • Water bottle or hydration system
  • Personal medications and basic first-aid supplies
  • Headlamp and spare batteries
  • Passport, permits and travel documents
  • Trekking poles
  • Backpack or duffel bag

For peak climbing and mountaineering, additional technical equipment such as crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet and climbing clothing may be required. South Col Adventures provides guidance on equipment requirements for each climbing program.

Health & Fitness

The required fitness level depends on the selected journey. Short cultural tours and lower-altitude hikes require moderate fitness, while high-altitude trekking and peak climbing require stronger physical preparation.

Regular walking, hiking, cardiovascular exercise and strength training before your trip can help prepare your body for long days on varied mountain terrain.

Communication & Connectivity

Mobile and internet connectivity is available in many populated areas but can become limited or unavailable in remote mountain regions. Travelers should not depend entirely on mobile communication during remote treks and expeditions.

Our guides and support teams help coordinate communication and logistics throughout the journey where available.

Money & Payments

Nepalese Rupees are used throughout Nepal. ATMs and card facilities are available in Kathmandu, Pokhara and larger towns, but cash is essential for many trekking areas.

For remote treks, carrying sufficient local currency for personal expenses is recommended, as banking facilities become increasingly limited at higher elevations.

Local Culture & Responsible Travel

Nepal is culturally diverse, and respectful behavior is an important part of responsible travel. Dress modestly when visiting temples and monasteries, ask permission before photographing people, respect religious traditions and avoid disturbing sacred sites.

We encourage travelers to support local communities, reduce plastic waste, respect wildlife and protect the natural environment throughout their journey.

Safety in the Mountains

Mountain conditions can change quickly. Weather, trail conditions, altitude and other factors may affect the itinerary. South Col Adventures maintains flexibility where necessary and prioritizes the safety of guests and staff.

Our experienced guides monitor conditions throughout the journey and may recommend changes to the itinerary when required.

Emergency & Evacuation

For trekking and climbing programs, emergency procedures are planned according to the destination and nature of the journey. Depending on circumstances, assistance may involve local rescue services, medical facilities and helicopter evacuation, subject to weather, availability and insurance coverage.

Travelers should always carry appropriate insurance and provide accurate emergency and medical information before departure.
