About Tengkoma Peak Climbing (6215M)

Tengkoma Peak Climbing in Nepal – 6,215 m

Tengkoma Peak Climbing is an exciting high-altitude Himalayan adventure in the remote Kanchenjunga region of eastern Nepal. Standing at 6,215 meters (20,390 ft), Tengkoma Peak is an officially opened mountain in the Kanchenjunga range and lies close to the spectacular Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (Pangpema).

Tengkoma Peak has a notable climbing history in Nepal’s remote Kanchenjunga region. The peak was first climbed in 1933 and remained largely overlooked for decades before being reopened to climbers in 1998. In 1999, an expedition team recorded its ascent as only the third officially recognized climb of Tengkoma Peak.

Organized by South Col Adventures, the Tengkoma Peak Climbing expedition combines remote trekking through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area with the rewarding challenge of ascending a 6,000-meter Himalayan peak. The journey passes through traditional mountain settlements, rhododendron and alpine forests, high valleys, glaciers, moraines and dramatic Himalayan landscapes before reaching the Tengkoma climbing area.

Unlike many technical Himalayan peaks, Tengkoma Peak is regarded as a non-technical or relatively straightforward 6,000-meter climb. However, its high elevation, cold temperatures, snow-covered terrain, steep sections and unpredictable mountain weather make it a serious high-altitude undertaking. Good physical fitness, proper acclimatization and suitable mountain preparation are essential.

The adventure is particularly attractive to climbers looking for a less crowded alternative to popular Nepal peak-climbing destinations such as Mera Peak, Lobuche Peak and Island Peak. The route also provides an opportunity to experience the unique Sherpa culture and remote wilderness of the Kanchenjunga region.

Tengkoma Peak Climbing with South Col Adventures offers the perfect blend of remote Himalayan wilderness, authentic mountain culture and the achievement of reaching a Himalayan 6,000-meter peak.

                                            🏔️ 06. Altitude Sickness & Acclimatization

With a summit altitude of 6,215 m, altitude sickness is an important concern. Symptoms may include:

Headache • Nausea • Dizziness • Fatigue • Loss of appetite • Difficulty sleeping

Our itinerary allows appropriate acclimatization. Climbers should walk slowly, stay hydrated, eat well, and rest properly.

If serious symptoms develop, further ascent should stop and descent to a lower altitude may be necessary.

Safety always comes before summit success.

Although Tengkoma is a non-technical peak, equipment requirements can vary according to season, weather, and route conditions.

                                            🌨️ 10. Weather & Summit Attempt

Mountain weather can change rapidly. Snowfall, strong winds, extreme cold, poor visibility, and changing trail or snow conditions can affect the climbing schedule.

The summit attempt normally starts early in the morning. If conditions become unsafe, the climbing team may delay, modify, or cancel the summit attempt.

                                            🏕️ 11. Accommodation & Meals

During the trekking section, accommodation is generally provided in tea houses, lodges, or basic local accommodation where available. Higher sections and the climbing period may involve camping.

Meals generally include Nepali, Tibetan, and basic international dishes. Food choices become more limited in remote areas and at higher elevations, making proper nutrition and hydration important.

                                            🛡️ 12. Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and should cover:

                                            • High-altitude trekking and peak climbing
                                            • Emergency medical treatment
                                            • Helicopter evacuation
                                            • Mountain rescue
                                            • Trip cancellation/interruption
                                            • Lost or delayed baggage

Ensure your policy specifically covers peak climbing up to 6,215 m.

The itinerary may be adjusted whenever necessary. In an emergency, appropriate rescue or evacuation arrangements will be made according to the situation.

                                            📱 14. Communication & Electricity

The Kanchenjunga region is remote, and mobile networks and internet services can be limited or unavailable in some areas. Electricity may also be restricted at remote lodges and camps.

We recommend carrying a power bank, spare batteries, and essential electronic devices. A Nepal SIM card may provide mobile data where network coverage is available.
